Construction Update 10/6/26
A message from the city of RHE
Dapplegray School Traffic and Construction
The City of Rolling Hills Estates understands the concern following this morning’s collision near Dapplegray Elementary School, along with the continued frustration over traffic congestion during construction. We were aware of the incident and share the community’s concern for everyone involved. The safety of students, families, pedestrians, and all who travel through this area remains our highest priority.
Regarding this morning’s collision, the Sheriff’s Department’s Lomita Station reported that a driver entered the intersection on a red light. Based on the information provided by the Sheriff’s Department, the collision was not related to the current construction project. We recognize that a collision near the school is unsettling, and we continue to evaluate traffic conditions and safety throughout the corridor.
The City is taking the following steps:
Ongoing Traffic Engineering Review: The City and our traffic engineer have regularly assessed traffic conditions throughout construction. As part of this ongoing review, we have requested another on-site assessment of the intersection and construction setup to review signal timing, sightlines, and signage and recommend any immediate operational adjustments. The assessment will also evaluate whether additional personnel could help support safe traffic flow during morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up, while ensuring coordination with existing traffic controls.
Project Schedule & Communication: We understand the frustration with the gap in project updates since mid-September. The City has requested an updated construction schedule from the contractor and is following up to confirm the remaining milestones and anticipated completion timeline. Once we confirm that information, we will share a community update so families have a clearer understanding of the work ahead.
School drop-off and pick-up are naturally busy periods, and construction has added to those traffic challenges. We ask school families to allow extra travel time when possible and drive with care and attention throughout the area, particularly near crosswalks and school entrances. We appreciate everyone’s help and coordination in keeping students, families, and other travelers safe.
Following our traffic engineer’s on-site review, we will continue to share updates and any planned adjustments. Thank you for your patience and continued feedback as we work to complete these safety and infrastructure improvements.
