  • 2:40 Dancing in the Street

The last two songs are for listening. "Dancing in the Street" written by Marvin Gaye. This song is a style of rock music called "Motown". Motown is named after it's hometown, Detroit. Detroit is known as the Motor City because of the many car factories there. The singers are Martha Reeves and the Vandellas. Motown was also known as soul music and became a major musical style in the 1960's. Enjoy! The other song is "Oye como va" performed by a Latin group called "Santana". This song combines rock and roll and salsa. The leader of the group's name is Carlos Santana (born 1947). He has been the leader of this band since the late 1960's. He is still performing and won nine Grammy Awards in the year 2000. Enjoy! Have a great summer! Mrs. G

  • Ragtime Cowboy Joe1:43 Ragtime Cowboy Joe

Hello 2nd Grade students! This week I have some exciting listening and songs for you! Your second song is called "Ragtime Cowboy Joe" and is a style of music we call Ragtime! Ragtime music was very popular over a hundred years ago, in the 1890's. People loved to dance to its unique rhythms.
    Enjoy! Mrs. G

    Ragtime Cowboy Joe

Oh, how he sings – raggy music to his cattle as he swings
Back and forth in his saddle on a horse - That is syncopated, gaited.
What a funny meter to the roar of his repeater.
How they run – when they hear the fella’s gun
Because the western folks all know.
He’s a high falutin’, rootin’, tootin’,
Son of a gun from Arizona,
He’s some cowboy, talk about your cowboy,
    Ragtime Cowboy Joe!

    Ev’ry Kind of Music

Ev’ry kind of music, - Gotta have music,
Give me lots of music, to sing and dance and play.
Feel the beat a movin’, - singin’ a song to make my day,
Makes me swing and sway, singin’ on the way.

Way Down in the Music Poem
    By Eloise Greenfield

I get way down in the music
    Down inside the music
    I let it wake me
    Take me
Spin me around and make me
    Uh – get down
I get way down in the music
    Down inside the music
    I let it wake me
    Take me
Spin me around and shake me
    I get down, down
    I get down

  • Lots of Worms2:30 Lots of Worms

    Lots of Worms

    Verse 1
Well, there are lots of worms, way under the ground,
Lots of worms, that I’ve never found, I’ll bet they’re
Way down there, a diggin’ around,
    Way under the ground.

    Verse 2
I dug the biggest hole I ever did dig,
The biggest hole, it sure was big!
And when I got to the bottom, you know what I found,
    Way under the ground.

    Verse 3
I found a worm to go on a fishing pole
Down in the bottom of that deep, dark hole.
But I left him alone ‘cause he like his home,
    Way under the ground.

    Verse 4
I found a bumpety bug with big black dots,
    Thirty-three legs and twenty-two spots.
But I left it alone ‘cause it liked it’s home
    Way under the ground.

    Verse 5
I found an old sow bug curled up like a ball
She didn’t move from there at all.
So, I left her alone ‘cause she liked her home
    Way under the ground.

    Repeat Verse 1

  • Families1:42 Families

    Families
All around the world there are families.
*We call them by different names.
We differ in the way we talk,
*in our clothes, our toys and games . . .
Yet we. . . are one in many ways,
    beginning with our birth . . .
    We are . . . a great big family;
    all children of . . . the earth . . . (Repeat)

  • Family Tree2:28 Family Tree

    Family Tree
Before the days of Jell-O, lived a prehistoric fellow,
who loved a maid and courted her, beneath the Banyan tree.
    And they had lots of children, and their children all had children;
and they kept on having children until one of them had me.
    Chorus:
    We're a family and we're a tree.
Our roots go deep down in history.
From my great, great granddaddy reaching out to me.
We're a green and growing family tree.
My grandpa came from Russia, my grandma came from Prussia.
They met in Nova Scotia, had my Dad in Tennessee.
Then they moved to Yokohama, where Daddy met my Mama.
Her Dad's from Alabama and her Mom's part Cherokee.
    Repeat Chorus
    The folks in Madagascar aren't the same as in Alaskar;
They've got different foods, different moods and different colored skin.
    You may have a different name, but underneath we're much the same;
You're probably my cousin and the whole world is our kin.
    Final Chorus
    We're a family and we're a tree.
Our roots go deep down in history.
From my great, great granddaddy reaching out to me.
We're a green and growing family tree.
We're a green and growing family.
