  • 00:60 Hotaru koi (Come, Firefly)

Hello 1st Grade Students! This week you'll be listening and learning a song from Japan called "Hotaru Koi" which means Come Firefly in English. Listen to the Japanese words first and the beautiful instruments from Japan called the Shamisen and the Koto. Both of these are string instruments played in Japan. They also use a flute like instrument called the Shakuhachi made out of Bamboo. Bamboo is a common material used to make flutes, etc. It is actually a grass!

    Spotlight on Fireflies

There are many kinds of “lightning bugs,” as they are sometimes called. Fireflies aren’t flies at all, for flies have one pair of wings. Instead, fireflies are flying beetles, since they have two pairs of wings. Fireflies live mostly where the weather is warm and humid. In the United States, many are found east of the Rocky Mountains. Although fireflies’ glow and flash all day long, they can be seen at night only. Their larvae (eggs) are called “glow worms.” Guess why?

    Lyrics in English
    Come, Firefly (Hotaru Koi)

    Come, Come, Come, firefly.
That water there is too bitter to drink,
This water here is much better, I think.
    Come, Come, Come, firefly.

  • Louder than a Clap of Thunder 2:04 Louder than a Clap of Thunder

Louder than a Clap of Thunder
    By Jack Prelutsky

Louder than a clap of thunder,
    Louder than an eagle screams,
    Louder than a dragon blunders,
    Or a dozen football teams,
    Louder than a four-alarmer,
    Or a rushing waterfall,
Louder than a knight in armor
    Jumping from a ten-foot wall.
    Louder than an earthquake rumbles,
    Louder than a tidal wave,
    Louder than an ogre grumbles
As he stumbles through his cave,
    Louder than stampeding cattle,
    Louder than a cannon roars,
    Louder than a giant’s rattle,
That’s how loud my father SNORES!!!!

    Firefly Poem
    By Elizabeth Maddox Roberts
A little light is going by,
Is going up to see the sky,
    A little light with wings.

I never could have thought of it,
To have a little bug all lit
And made to go on wings.

  • We’re Making Popcorn (Speech Piece) 1:43 We’re Making Popcorn (Speech Piece)

    We’re Making Popcorn (Speech Piece)

    Refrain
*We’re making popcorn, pop, pop, pop, pop, popcorn.
    Old . . .... fashioned popcorn!

    Verse 1
You need oil, corn, and heat, heat, heat.
You need a pan and the urge to eat, eat, eat. *

    Verse 2
Put the corn in the oil
On the stove to get hot.
Shake the pan so the kernels
    Won’t stick a lot. *

    Verse 3
With a lid on the pan,
    All the kernels expand.
See the steam start to grow,
They have no place to go. *
*Go back to Refrain and Repeat
